LAW 5044 :
Asylum Law, Policy & Strategy

This course will examine the legal framework for evaluating asylum claims and strategically advocating for asylum-seekers through the US domestic asylum process. Using case studies, scholarly research, and policy reports, we will explore how asylum claims are adjudicated and can be fortified when presented before the USCIS office or immigration court. We will study the strengths and limitations of the institutions, laws, and policies, including the challenges to resettlement for individuals seeking asylum during and after their cases. This is a three-credit practical writing course. Assignments are designed to build legal writing, editing, analysis, advocacy and oral presentation skills. Students will be asked to summarize and advocate for nuanced basis of protection under asylum law; evaluate individual claims for asylum protection; and respond to legal and policy questions raised by refugee lawyers and social service providers.
