Addressing Secondary Addictions in Drug & Alcohol Treatment Although the primary goal of substance abuse treatment is abstinence from drugs and alcohol, there are a percentage of A&D clients for whom this single focus won't work. How does a counselor prioritize treatment goals when clients have secondary issues such as incest, sex addiction, gambling, debting, eating disorders, adult children of alcoholics or some combination of the above? Stragtegies for this crucial & difficult decision-making process will be explored as well as practical techniques to identify, pace & address secondar issues at various points in clients' recovery.
