Sports Law: Prof. Athlete Rep

Sports Law: Introduction to the Field and Representation of the Professional Athlete. This course will begin with a general overview of the field of sports law, explaining the structure of professional sports leagues and players' unions; the power of the Commissioner and moral integrity in sports. The primary focus of the course will then be looking at labor-management relations in professional sports. From the player side, the course will delve into representation of professional athletes, discussing responsibilities that include player/team contract negotiations, marketing representation, financial management and general duties and obligations of the agent. From the team side, the course will discuss negotiation issues with the player, the agent, the league, the union, etc. and the challenging nature of the Salary Cap. The course will include a substantial skills component focused negotiation and operational management from the perspective of a team, and agent/attorney and the athlete.
